I N V O C A T I O N

God of comfort and compassion,

through Jesus, your Son, you lead us

to the water of life and table of your bounty.

May we who have received

the tender love of our Good Shepherd

be strengthened by your grace

to care for your flock.

Amen.

John 13:31-35

T A K E A W A Y S & Q U E S T I O N S

*Jesus said in the text from John chapter 13 (and a bunch of other places) that he was/is/will be “glorified” in God/the Father and that God/the Father was/is/will be “glorified” in Jesus/the Son. Jesus promises all that glory would make its way into Jesus’s followers too. Why glorified? How glorified? What even is glorified??

*Do you want a taste of the glory? See what it tastes like??

Glory is a pretty abstract concept in this context. When I think of glory, I think of success, celebrity, and the like. Glory comes from the Greek word “doxazo” which primarily means holding something or someone in your mind or imagination. It could just as easily be translated, “recognized” or “known”

*When Jesus spoke of “the son of man” pretty much all preachers and scholars agree Jesus is talking about himself I. The 3rd person. With that in mind — and turning to the idea of doxazo as “holding someone in one’s mind” and “recognizing or making them known,” we could read Jesus’s words like this:

Now I am made known

And God is made known in me

If God is made known in me

He will make me known in himself

And will make me known at once

*God was/is known in Jesus — the words, the actions — and Jesus celebrates being known in God/the father. It’s flowing to and fro’ — this being, this knowing, this holding. And it manifests in “loving them to the end” (John 13:1-3).

*When we know and are known, we make known. When you really love someone you want to “make them known,” and when someone really loves you they just can’t help but make you know . Love just keeps moving in and out and around and round. So much of what and who I know and love is because another person who I loved mad it/them known to me. We can’t help glorifying what we love. We say, “you gotta hear this; you have to meet my friend; oh just wait until you taste it!”

*Who is someone you love because someone you already love made them known (glorified)?

*Who is someone who loves you because someone they love made you known?

*And in this kind of holding and knowing and glorifying, we see this almost confusing and beautiful movement of in-ness:

Jesus in God and God in Jesus and us in them and them in us and Mary in Eric and Eric in Mary and Mary and Eric in us — being made known — and round and round the love and being known goes…to the very end. Amen.

B E N E D I C T I O N

You are God’s Child

Gifted with dreams and visions.

Upon you rests the grace of God like flames of fire.

Love and serve the Lord in the wildness of your being.

Practice Resurrection.

And may the deep peace of Christ be with you,

The strong arms of God sustain you,

And the glory of the Holy Spirit shine upon your face.

Amen.

Resource: Michelle Torigian

For communion, we looked to the words of Reverend Michelle Torigian. Her reflections center us within this sacred story of Christ. When we see our lives this way, Christ can appear anytime anywhere. What kinds of actions will that bring forth?

Practice: First Prayers

This week, how about returning to some of the very first prayers you ever prayed. First, think through what they even were. Think back: what were some of your first interactions with God. Did it feel sweet? obligatory? weird? meaningful? Whatever it was, make room for these memories.

And then, reflect on what, possibly, were some of the words you used during that time. Maybe it was "I'm scared" or "Help me". Knowing that you've likely changed since that time in your faith life, how can you integrate your initial prayers into your prayer life now? How can you use these words as a sort of "coming home"?

When you financially support Commonplace Church, you help cultivate a place where people are drawn to the transformative heart of Christ through hospitality, beauty, authenticity, belonging, and wholeness.

Our donation platform, Zeffy, does not charge us any fees (which is truly incredible). When you check out, Zeffy prompts you to donate to their cause, with a suggested amount. You can opt out, if you want, by clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Other". Then, just type in 0.

from Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey:

O God who provides all things necessary for our lives, there’s little in this life that will so starkly reveal our insecurities and our struggle to trust your tender care as will the state of our hearts when we consider the state of our finances. We can slip so easily into the downward spiral of believing that simply having more of it would guarantee our security. Guard our hearts against that lie, then teach us what it would mean to begin to live more generously towards those whose needs are greater than our own. For we have you, and in having you we have all things. Amen

Grace and Peace,

Katrina
