I N V O C A T I O N

Open our hearts to your power moving

around us and between us and within us,

until your glory is revealed in our love of both friend and enemy,

in communities transformed by justice and compassion,

and in the healing of all that is broken.

Amen.

Job 42:10

After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.

T A K E A W A Y S & Q U E S T I O N S

*We considered a prayer from the 15th century Swiss contemplative mystic, Nicholas of Flüe:

My Lord and my God, take from me everything that distances me from you.

My Lord and my God, give me everything that brings me closer to you.

My Lord and my God, detach me from myself to give my all to you.

*What does this prayer feel like in your mind…heart…life?

*What do I want God to “take” from me?

*What do I want God to “give” to me?

*Does it feel extreme? Would God ask us to give up our dreams, our most treasured relationships? Values? Pleasures?

*I think this is more about our relationship to everything! Everything we want. Everything we need. Sometimes, our attachment to the outcome may become unhealthy or obsessive. Let’s examine that. Where am I gripping, clinging, too attached to my desired outcome?

*We might think we know what needs to be taken from us and what needs to be given to us.

*But what if it’s everything? Take everything from me and return everything to me…surrender and wisdom.

*Oh Lord, take everything I want and need and love. Show me where my attachments are unhealthy that all may return to me in this cycle of surrender and newness and wisdom.

B E N E D I C T I O N

You are God’s Child

Gifted with dreams and visions.

Upon you rests the grace of God like flames of fire.

Love and serve the Lord in the wildness of your being.

Practice Resurrection.

And may the deep peace of Christ be with you,

The strong arms of God sustain you,

And the glory of the Holy Spirit shine upon your face.

Amen.

Resource: A Collection of Prayers

Sometimes it can be really nice to rely on the words of others when we pray. Just as the prayer from Nicholas of Flue can expand our experience of God, other prayers can do that as well. This week, try praying through some prayers that are new to you. See what comes to the surface.

Practice: Holding Prayer Requests

“He prayed as he breathed, forming no words and making no specific requests, only holding in his heart, like broken birds in cupped hands, all those people who were in stress or grief” -Edith Pargeter

On Sunday, we shared some prayer requests. Revisit those concerns shared and add some more to the list. Then, use this Pargeter quote as inspiration...make room for these requests in your heart, holding them gently before the Lord.

When you financially support Commonplace Church, you help cultivate a place where people are drawn to the transformative heart of Christ through hospitality, beauty, authenticity, belonging, and wholeness.

Our donation platform, Zeffy, does not charge us any fees (which is truly incredible). When you check out, Zeffy prompts you to donate to their cause, with a suggested amount. You can opt out, if you want, by clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Other". Then, just type in 0.

from Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey:

O God who provides all things necessary for our lives, there’s little in this life that will so starkly reveal our insecurities and our struggle to trust your tender care as will the state of our hearts when we consider the state of our finances. We can slip so easily into the downward spiral of believing that simply having more of it would guarantee our security. Guard our hearts against that lie, then teach us what it would mean to begin to live more generously towards those whose needs are greater than our own. For we have you, and in having you we have all things. Amen

Grace and Peace,

Katrina
