I N V O C A T I O N

Your voice burns within the depths of our being,

O God of our ancestors,

and draws us into your presence and service.

Hear the cries of your people

and speak a word of comfort,

that we may proclaim to all the earth

the glory of your name.

Amen.

Matthew 16:21-26

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

*Dolly Parton was someone who took up her cross and lived into her expression of the Imago Dei: “Trailing Dolly around the world, I witnessed so many small moments where she’d gracefully own her power without the slightest hint of fight.” -Jad Abumrad

*"the call to die is an invitation to actually find life in the risen Christ. To put it another way, the vocation is to be a person of the third day…, on the third day God acts: Water is turned into wine, Lazarus is raised, and, definitively, the risen Christ reveals the peaceable kingdom in resurrection’s garden." -Rachel Mann

*You sacrifice for what you love. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are already sacrificing for something.

*How can YOU personify God’s love in the world in only the way you can?

*“all of us wield influence in whatever circles we inhabit. In those circles, big or small, with that influence, obvious or under the radar, do we actively choose to look past our self-preservation and risk our own interest for the sake of the vulnerable, oppressed, marginalized, and fearful?” -Jill Duffield

You are God’s Child

Gifted with dreams and visions.

Upon you rests the grace of God like flames of fire.

Love and serve the Lord in the wildness of your being.

Practice Resurrection.

And may the deep peace of Christ be with you,

The strong arms of God sustain you,

And the glory of the Holy Spirit shine upon your face.

Amen.

Resource: Dolly Parton's America

Katrina mentioned this podcast series from 2019. It's a great listen. Give it a shot...or just play Coat of Many Colors over and over and over again. Or both!

Practice: Returning to Help

We love how Dolly Parton invested her money back into ending cycles of poverty...since this was how she grew up. True heroes often return to help their communities. We see Jesus do this, of course.

Look back on your life. Where have you experienced patterns of oppression or deep woundedness? What is one small way you could help to end this cycle? Is there a nonprofit you could donate even 5 dollars to? Or someone in your life now who needs to hear your story? Get creative and let us know what you come up with!

When you financially support Commonplace Church, you help cultivate a place where faith is nurtured and every soul has space to mutually flourish into what God designed from the get-go.

THANK YOU ! ! !

Our donation platform, Zeffy, does not charge us any fees (which is truly incredible). When you check out, Zeffy prompts you to donate to their cause, with a suggested amount. You can opt out, if you want, by clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Other". Then, just type in 0.

Grace and Peace,

Katrina
