John 16:12-15

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

T A K E A W A Y S & Q U E S T I O N S

*Happy Father’s Day! There are bio dads, step dads, adoptive dads, quasi-surrogate-older-friend dads, etcetera, etcetera. No one does it perfect. Some of us feel like failures at least half the time. Wherever you are in the child-parental unit equation, may you always find your way to love, forgiveness, and belonging.

*“They” say all the time our country is very divided. So it seems. But, perhaps we need to be more honest about the division we feel within our own beings.

*What is the truth? Externally. Internally. How do we know? Who is right about this local, national, or global issue? And within, we feel the tension, the division, our own uncertainty about so much!

*Jesus said, “I’m the truth!” Jesus said “Everything I do and say is from Father/God/Heaven.” But we need more? More specificity for the people increasingly complex and pluralistic world.

*Jesus said “I have more to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.” We say, “Do tell us!” Jesus says, “Father will send the Holy Spirit.”

*The Spirit of truth will show you, tell you, lead you.

*How do you hear the voice of love? How do we access this Spirit of Truth? How do we know what is true?

*More to say. More to bear. The kingdom of God is not static. It is not narrowing. It is moving and widening. Such is the nature of love. And where is that Holy Spirit Jesus promised? Look around. Look within. You may be surprised!

*I (Darren) saw a man in a wheelchair at the “No Kings” protest in my little town. On the back of his wheelchair was a homemade sign that read “I’m with stupid.” An arrow was drawn below the text, ⬅️ pointing to the left. Let’s be honest. We all feel ill-equipped and under-confident about some of these most weighty matters in the public and private sphere. We all feel stupid.

*The word "stupid" originates from the Latin word "stupidus.” “Stupidus" is derived from the Latin verb "stupere," which means "to be stunned or amazed." To be awake is to be stupid — stupefied!!

B E N E D I C T I O N

You are God’s Child

Gifted with dreams and visions.

Upon you rests the grace of God like flames of fire.

Love and serve the Lord in the wildness of your being.

Practice Resurrection.

And may the deep peace of Christ be with you,

The strong arms of God sustain you,

And the glory of the Holy Spirit shine upon your face.

Amen.

Resource: Prayers for Juneteenth

Juneteenth is coming right up! Spend some time with this collection of prayers from Justice Renewal.

Practice: What is stunning and amazing?

This week, look for the stunning and amazing in the mundane. Look again at the bird, the blade of grass, the flow of traffic, the freckles on their face. Let everything be an invitation to see God in our very midst. Let it stun and amaze you. There is just so much to wonder about.

When you financially support Commonplace Church, you help cultivate a place where people are drawn to the transformative heart of Christ through hospitality, beauty, authenticity, belonging, and wholeness.

Our donation platform, Zeffy, does not charge us any fees (which is truly incredible). When you check out, Zeffy prompts you to donate to their cause, with a suggested amount. You can opt out, if you want, by clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Other". Then, just type in 0.

Grace and Peace,
